The Red Bull Rampage is the crowning event of the FMBA and is a Diamond Level Event taking place in the desert hills of Virgin, Utah. The worlds top downhill mountain bike riders stretched the limits of what can be done on a bike this past weekend. Over a thousand spectators came to the limited entry event and spread themselves all over the hillsides of the Rampage site.
Audio distribution for an event like the Rampage is not an easy task; the area to cover is immense and the location makes it difficult to get a substantially large PA into the Venue. The goal is to cover the venue with highly intelligible speech reinforcement for announcements and commentary purposes. For this purpose we chose to use Community RSH-462 Loudspeakers and Community R.5HP loudspeakers, these speakers are not very musical but are optimized for highly intelligible long distance speech transmission. Speaker placement is in the middle of the venue half way up the hill, this helps eliminate bleed onto the NBC Broadcast of the Rampage and puts the speakers centralized in the audience area. The R.5HP's cover the spectator area in the immediate location of the speaker towers while the RSH speakers point up the mountain and across the canyons to reach attendees in those locations. This combination worked great and made it so that there was crystal clear audio in all parts of the large venue.
A Lectrosonics wireless mic was given to the signature emcee Brad Ewen, which gave him the freedom to announce from practically any part of the venue. A Com-Tec wireless transmission system was used to transmit audio to the Base Camp and Finish Corral that were over a quarter mile away from the event site.
