SSL Live & L-Acoustics for the University of Utah

A world class sound system was provided and operated by Poll Sound this last week for the commencement and convocation ceremonies at the University of Utah. Do to construction at the Jon M. Huntsman arena Poll Sound was asked to bring in a sound reinforcement system capable of covering a 270 degree setup of the venue. The event was a huge success and audio perfection was achieved for the thousands of graduation candidates, faculty, family and friends that attended the ceremonies. You can read below to learn a little more about what went into the show.

Achieving audio perfection requires the combination of several key components: qualified audio engineers and techs, properly engineered loud-speakers for the acoustic space and high quality signal processing equipment.

For this event we decided to use L-Acoustics loud-speakers, the main arrays consisted of 12 Kara line-array enclosures each; while the out-fill arrays consisted of 9 Kiva enclosures each. On the floor 8XT loudspeakers were placed across the stage to fill in the front rows. Up on the stage 5XT loudspeakers were used for fold-back for the faculty and dignitaries seated on the stage; while two more 8XT loudspeakers were used as monitors for the orchestras, choirs and performing groups for the ceremonies. All loudspeakers were powered using L-Acoustics amplified controllers.

At the heart of the event was the new live mixing console from Solid State Logic the L500. The consoles enormous amount of built in processing power provided features that really helped get crystal clear audio out of the system. Using the All-Pass filters, De-Essers, Bus-Compressors, Dynamic Equalizers, etc really helped get optimal gain out of the system and have rich full sounding audio amplification. The console made it really easy to adapt to changes in the run of show as individual colleges would bring in performing groups for their convocations. Re adjusting the fader tile layers, adding stems and channels was a cinch. This console really is awesome!

Shure AXIENT wireless microphones allowed for us to have complete confidence for zero dropouts with keynote speakers and performers using it at the commencement. We also saved a bunch on batteries thanks to the awesome batteries and fast charger that the AXIENT system uses.
